Podar Pearl School, Meshaf, organised an insightful University Admissions and College Readiness Session for students of Grades 11 and 12. The session was conducted in collaboration with Score Plus Education. It focused on career awareness, university selection, college readiness, and future academic pathways.
Mr. Michael Gamerl, former Vice President of The Princeton Review, led the session. He brings more than 20 years of experience in college readiness and international admissions across the United States and the Middle East.
The session encouraged students to begin their career planning journey by understanding themselves. Students reflected on their abilities, interests, preferences, strengths, and aspirations.
They also explored the concept of Multiple Intelligences. The discussion helped students understand that intelligence can take many forms. It also showed that individual strengths go beyond traditional academic abilities.
Students then explored ways to identify their career interests. They learned how personal interests can guide academic and career choices. In addition, they discussed the importance of finding a balance between their strengths and interests.
Discovering Future Career Pathways
The session encouraged students to explore a wider range of career possibilities. They were encouraged to look beyond familiar or conventional career choices.
Students also considered how their skills and interests could connect with different career pathways. This approach encouraged them to think about careers that match their individual abilities and aspirations.
As a result, students gained a broader perspective on career exploration. They also understood the importance of making career decisions based on personal strengths and genuine interests.
Understanding University Rankings and Selection
The session also focused on university admissions and selection. Students explored the role of university rankings when researching higher education options.
Mr. Gamerl encouraged students to look beyond rankings when choosing a university. Rankings can use several different criteria. Therefore, students should not rely on rankings alone.
Instead, students should consider the course, curriculum, learning opportunities, university environment, and student experience. They should also consider their personal interests and long-term career goals.
This approach can help students make more informed university decisions. It can also help them choose institutions that suit their individual aspirations.
Preparing for College and the Future
A key takeaway from the University Admissions and College Readiness Session was the importance of knowing oneself before choosing a career or university.
Students were encouraged to recognise their strengths and explore their interests. They also learned to research different career pathways and evaluate universities carefully.
The interactive session provided Grade 11 and 12 students with practical guidance for their future. It strengthened their understanding of career planning, university selection, and college readiness.
